MLS’ Chicago Fire will host Tigres UANL of Mexico in search of its first international titleNEW YORK (Thursday, July 16, 2009) – A new SuperLiga champion will be crowned on Wednesday, Aug. 5 when the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer hosts Tigres UANL of Mexico in the grand finale of the tournament. The SuperLiga final will be played at TOYOTA PARK in Bridgeview, Ill. at 8 p.m. ET.
The Fire’s CuauhtĂ©moc Blanco sealed Chicago’s pass to the final with a second-half goal against reigning champions New England Revolution on Wednesday night for a 2-1 victory. Tigres defeated Santos Laguna 3-2 in the second semifinal. The 2009 SuperLiga marks the first participation in the tournament for both the Fire and Tigres. In the inaugural edition of SuperLiga, Pachuca of Mexico took the international prize, before the New England Revolution won the title in 2008. Both finals concluded in penalty kicks.
